Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as an infant. She was night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. While she was still in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was given and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
